Schiffsbauerin |
Anna Lange (1785 -1867), Schiffsbauerin
Vulkan" umgewandelt.

Anna Lange (1785 -1867), shipbuilder
Anna Lange was an entrepreneur in a typical Bremen business branch,
and contributed greatly to the establishment of the Hansa City's
reputation as the home of a long-standing shipbuilding tradition.
Anna Lange nee Raschen
came from a family of shipbuilders in the Bremen community of St.
Magnus. She is certain to have contributed much in the way of business
know-how and shrewdness to the shipbuilding company of her husband,
Johann Lange. It was this company which built the first German passenger
steamer, the WESER, launched in 1817. Employing as many as 600 labourers,
the firm also comprised a fish oil cookery and a steam-powered mill,
making it one of Bremen's largest shipyards.
Following her husband's
death in 1844, Anna Lange carried on the shipbuilding business. Due to
the legal circumstances, however, her name did not appear in the
company's new designation: Werft Johann Lange Witwe Erben (Shipyard
Johann Lange Widow Heirs). Accustomed as she was to negotiating with
clients, keeping the books and dealing with the workers, she was a
successful businesswoman who led her company in the building of seventy
ships. Her resolute and self-confident manner earned her the reputation
of being "the only man in Vegesack." In 1893, the Lange Shipyard was
converted into the stock corporation Bremer Vulkan.
